Matthew Gouyd

A Charlotte native, Matthew is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHC-A). He received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University before moving on to complete his master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Southern New Hampshire University.

I have experience working with adolescents, families, and groups in inpatient, residential settings. Prior
to beginning my counseling practicum, I worked as a residential counselor for teens with mental health
and behavioral disorders in a residential setting, assisting in behavior management concerns. During my
counseling practicum and internship, I worked with teens who came from a variety of backgrounds, and
presented with mental health issues including depression, bipolar, anxiety, relational challenges,
adjustment disorder, gender dysphoria, grief and loss, trauma, and stress disorders. I also worked to treat
behavioral concerns such as Oppositional defiant Disorder, Conduct disorder, Disruptive mood
dysregulation disorder, Attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder, and Intellectual developmental
disorders. I worked in collaboration with psychiatrists, case managers and care coordinators, and
residential staff and supervisors.
Using an evidence-based and client centered approach it is my goal to provide a safe and comfortable
environment to work at the client’s pace to achieve their therapeutic goals. My only goal is to help the
client to identify meaning, purpose and direction in their life, establish strong coping skills, minimize
symptoms, and reframe challenging circumstances. I will use the following therapeutic approaches:
person-centered, psychodynamic, and a variety of CBT approaches as appropriate for each unique
client. At times homework may be provided to continue progress in achieving client defined goals
between sessions.
